Tracy Chevalier was born on October 19, 1962, in Washington, DC, the youngest of three children. A self-described nerdy child, she developed a deep love of reading early on. She earned her BA in English from Oberlin College in 1984 and later completed an MA in creative writing at the University of East Anglia in 1994. After moving to London following graduation, she eventually settled there permanently, gaining dual citizenship. Before becoming a writer, she worked as a reference book editor. She rose to international fame with Girl With a Pearl Earring in 1998, becoming a full-time writer. Her latest novel is The Glassmaker.
