The Spirit of Python

1. Recognize the Enemy's Subtle, Life-Choking Attack

As he slowly coils his way around us, we hardly even notice—until suddenly we find we can’t breathe.

Identify the enemy. The devil operates like a python, subtly infiltrating lives and slowly squeezing out spiritual vitality. This insidious attack often goes unnoticed until believers feel stifled, unproductive, and disconnected from God. The enemy's ultimate agenda is to steal, kill, and destroy, targeting our zeal for God, prayer life, and dreams.

Warning signs. Spiritual attacks manifest through various symptoms that, if ignored, can lead to severe spiritual decline. These include:

• Loss of spiritual desire
• Physical fatigue and mental oppression
• "Lack attacks" affecting finances and resources
• A weakening prayer life
• Feelings of being overwhelmed and hopeless
• Resurfacing of old habits and sinful lifestyles
• Pulling away from godly relationships

Take a stand. Recognizing these signs is crucial for spiritual survival. Just as one would fight to protect their possessions from a snake, believers must actively resist the python's grip. This involves "marking your tree" – making a firm, unwavering commitment to God in the face of adversity, and refusing to let the enemy steal what belongs to you.

2. Guard Your Inner World from Demonic Infiltration

The greatest battle for your soul is not the war going on between angels and demons; it is the war going on in between your ears.

Atmosphere is everything. Just as physical environments dictate what can grow, spiritual atmospheres determine what influences our lives. The devil seeks to create an atmosphere conducive to sin, while God's presence thrives in holiness, purity, praise, and unity. Our choices daily empower either the kingdom of light or darkness.

Demonic access points. Satan gains footholds in our lives through unaddressed sin, pride, and self-will. These "open windows and doors" allow "snake eggs" (negative thoughts) to be laid in our minds, which, if incubated, hatch into sinful actions. The things we allow ourselves to watch, hear, and speak profoundly affect our spiritual atmosphere.

Thought bombs. Every sin begins with a thought, a "thought bomb" planted by the enemy. These can range from lustful glances to doubts about God's Word. We must actively bring "every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ," refusing to let negative images or ideas take root. Guarding our eyes, ears, and mouth is paramount to preventing demonic influence.

3. Prioritize Spiritual Breath Through Word and Prayer

Without physical breathing your body would die; without spiritual breath your spirit man dies.

God's life-giving breath. The Bible highlights God's breath in four significant ways:

• Creating Adam (Genesis 2:7)
• Inspiring Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
• Imparting the Holy Spirit to disciples (John 20:22)
• Bringing life to dead situations (Ezekiel 37)

This "breath" symbolizes divine life, anointing, and the Holy Spirit, which the python seeks to choke out of us.

Spiritual respiration. Our spiritual life depends on a continuous cycle of "breathing in" God's Word and "breathing out" in prayer. Reading the Bible nourishes our spirit, while prayer connects us intimately with the Lord. Neglecting either aspect leads to spiritual barrenness, making us vulnerable to the enemy's suffocating grip.

Intimacy, dependency, obedience. Jesus's relationship with the Father exemplifies the three pillars of a vibrant spiritual life. Intimacy comes from dedicated alone time with God, fostering desire, discipline, and delight in His presence. Dependency acknowledges our inability to achieve lasting impact without Him. Obedience flows naturally from deep trust and understanding that God engineers all circumstances for our good.

4. Unleash Your Voice to Move Mountains and Break Pain

Your mountain knows your voice, and it will not move out of your life until you open your mouth and use your voice and your faith to change it.

The power of words. Our mouths are powerful weapons in spiritual warfare. Complaining, whining, and self-pity empower the enemy, while words of faith, prayer, and praise bring victory. The next generation will only speak the language of God if they hear it consistently modeled in our homes.

Speak to your mountains. Jesus taught that we have the authority to speak to "mountains" in our lives—behavioral, financial, emotional, and relational obstacles—and command them to move. These mountains often represent:

• Permanency: Long-standing issues that seem unchangeable.
• Pain: Past hurts and traumas that keep us trapped.

Break free. Faith, combined with our spoken word, can break the power of permanency and pain. We must refuse to be victims of our past or circumstances, instead declaring God's promises and grace over our lives. Our voice, empowered by faith, can activate angels and usher in God's presence, transforming seemingly impossible situations.

5. Embrace the Transformative Power of Praise

Praise changes the atmosphere and welcomes the presence of God.

Praise in adversity. Paul and Silas, beaten and chained in a dark prison, chose to pray and praise God at midnight. This act of worship in their darkest hour triggered an earthquake, breaking their chains and opening prison doors. This demonstrates that praise is not reserved for good times but is a powerful weapon against the enemy's grip, especially in affliction.

Rainmaker praise. "No worship, no rain" signifies that a lack of praise hinders the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Praise creates a spiritual cloud that, when accumulated, releases God's presence and blessings. We are called to be "rainmakers," actively engaging in heartfelt praise to change dry, lifeless atmospheres in our churches, homes, and communities.

Expressions and effects. Praise can be expressed in many ways—lifting hands, musical instruments, clapping, shouting, dancing, or simply recounting God's faithfulness. Its power is multifaceted:

• It is a weapon that brings victory and deliverance.
• It activates the spirit world, dispatching angels.
• It confounds the enemy and releases God's power.
• It is a lifestyle, not just an event.
• It frees others around us, creating a "chain reaction" of breakthrough.

6. Break Free from Self-Imposed Limitations and Past Baggage

The python puts a ceiling over you that says, “You can go this far but no farther. You can have this much but no more."

The spirit of limitation. The python's strategy includes convincing believers that God's blessings, miracles, and prosperity are not for them, or that they can only achieve a certain level of success. This limiting mindset often stems from past failures, family history, or perceived shortcomings, leading to a lack of faith to pursue God's greater plans.

Release the baggage. Like Saul hiding among the "equipment" (baggage) on his coronation day, we often allow past mistakes, temptations, or trivial distractions to weigh us down and prevent us from stepping into our divine calling. We must consciously choose to let go of this baggage, refusing to be chained to what no longer serves God's purpose for our lives.

Beyond "duct-tape faith." Many Christians settle for "duct-tape faith," merely patching up problems and expecting minimal blessings. God, however, is a God of maximum capacity, desiring to enlarge our territory and prosper us exceedingly. We must challenge our perception of "big," push past comfortable limits, and declare "God can" instead of "Can God," believing Him for greater things.

7. Beware of Fatal Distractions that Derail God's Purpose

If we’re not careful, the devil’s deliberate attempts to keep you from doing the will of God will work.

Subtle diversions. The devil employs insidious distractions to divert the church and individual believers from their divine purpose. These are often subtle, leading to a "quiet displacement" where spiritual priorities are gradually replaced by carnal or social concerns. When intimacy with the Holy Spirit wanes, and empty altars no longer cause pain, distraction has taken hold.

Three types of distractions:

• Emotional distractions: Getting caught up in political debates or social issues that, while important, overshadow the primary mission of preaching Christ crucified. These alienate us from those who need the gospel.
• Opportunity distractions: Tempting offers of more money or career advancement that require compromising spiritual commitments, such as church attendance or family spiritual leadership. "Never move for money; move because God wants you to move."
• People distractions: Allowing wrong relationships, manipulation, or even well-meaning but demanding individuals to pull us off course. Social media can also be a major source of this.

Guard your heart. We must guard our hearts diligently, recognizing that anything pulling us away from intimacy with Jesus is an enemy distraction. Like the Gibeonites who entangled Israel, wrong associations or compromises can drain our time and resources, preventing us from focusing on eternal matters.

8. Cultivate Prevailing Prayer for Earth-Shaking Breakthroughs

The enemy is not afraid of how long we shout. He is afraid of how deeply we pray.

Prayer's power. The python's primary tactic is to hinder prayer, knowing it is our greatest weapon. Prayer changes atmospheres, shakes the foundations of hell, and ushers in God's presence, power, and purpose. It is the earthly force that moves heavenly power, enabling us to bind, loose, and impose God's will into any situation.

Prevailing prayer. This is not "foxhole praying" only in crisis, but a consistent, insistent, continual life of communication with God. Examples like Moses interceding for Israel, Joshua commanding the sun, and Hezekiah's prayers for healing demonstrate its power to:

• Win battles and avert disaster.
• Add years to life and conquer disease.
• Cast out stubborn demons (requiring prayer and fasting).

Pattern and persistence. Jesus modeled a consistent pattern of prayer, making "deposits" in secret to "write spiritual checks" all day. Daniel's persistent prayer for 21 days, despite demonic resistance, shows that answers may be delayed but are always heard. We must pray the Word, building faith, and persist until breakthrough comes, refusing to give up when results aren't immediate.

9. Walk in Unwavering Faith Fueled by Perfect Love

The highest level of faith is perfect love.

Faith breaks the grip. Faith is essential to breaking the python's grip of limitation and lack. It grows as we grow in God, moving from one level to another, nurtured by consistent engagement with His Word. This growth often involves breaking through barriers and taking risks, daring to believe God for more than we currently see or imagine.

Love activates faith. The highest expression of faith is "faith expressing itself through love." Perfect love, which forgives and acts without agenda, is the ultimate catalyst for miracles and breakthrough. When the church operates in this realm of love, it unlocks God's power to see signs, wonders, and revival.

Beyond positive thinking. Spiritual warfare requires more than mere positive thinking or motivational speeches. Our weapons are "mighty in God for pulling down strongholds," casting down arguments, and bringing every thought into captivity to Christ. This demands zero tolerance for sin and a commitment to holiness, which raises our spiritual standard against the enemy's flood.

Enlarge your capacity. God is a God of maximum capacity, desiring to do "exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think." We must enlarge our capacity by believing Him for bigger things, pushing past what we perceive as "big," and trusting Him to fill every offering of our time, talent, and life. This journey of faith leads to discovering our divine destiny.

10. Don the Full Armor of God for Daily Spiritual Warfare

When coming against spiritual forces, you must fight against spiritual weapons of the enemy.

Equipped for battle. Christ has given us authority to overcome all the power of the enemy, but we must be properly equipped. Paul's description of the "whole armor of God" (Ephesians 6:11-18) provides a blueprint for daily spiritual readiness, protecting us from the devil's schemes.

Pieces of the armor:

• Belt of Truth: Grounding in God's Word, the foundation for all other armor.
• Breastplate of Righteousness: Relying on Christ's righteousness, not our own performance, against Satan's accusations.
• Shoes of Peace: Sure footing against worry, anxiety, and fear, rooted in God's promises.
• Shield of Faith: Extinguishing all the fiery darts of the wicked one, providing peace and protection.
• Helmet of Salvation: Protecting our thought life with the assurance of eternal salvation and forgiveness.
• Sword of the Spirit: The Word of God, used offensively to resist temptations and defeat the enemy.

Satan on a leash. Despite his roaring, Satan is a "lion on a leash," his power limited by God. We resist him by standing firm in the full armor, pleading the blood of Jesus, and speaking the Word of God. Daily checking and polishing our armor ensures we are always ready for active duty.

11. Cancel Every Demonic Assignment in Jesus's Name

There is more power in the name of Jesus than all the demons in hell!

Jesus's authority. Jesus is the master of the underworld, with a name above every name, to which every knee must bow. This power was demonstrated when He delivered the demon-possessed man in the land of the Gadarenes, a place far from God's presence, where people had compromised their faith by raising unclean pigs.

Borderline living. The Gadarenes represent "borderline Christians" who settle for compromise, trusting their own wisdom over God's leading, and gradually drifting from His presence. This distance allows intense demonic activity to take root, as seen in the man living among tombs, reflecting a society fascinated with the dead and the occult.

Kill the "pigs." When we pull away from God's presence, demons take over, leading to uncontrollable violence, addiction, and self-destructive behaviors. Jesus's encounter with the Gadarene man, where demons were cast into pigs, illustrates that God will "kill our pigs"—our idols, lust, and rebellion—to bring us back into His presence and set us free.

Cancel the assignment. We have the authority in Jesus's name to cancel every demonic assignment over our lives, families, churches, finances, and health. This is not about fear, but about exercising the power given to us. By drawing close to God and letting Him cleanse us, we can speak to demon powers and nullify their plans, knowing that His will overrides theirs.

12. Initiate a "Chain Reaction" of Freedom Through Praise

Praise and prayer are what start the “chain reaction” against the things that bind and enslave you.

Invisible chains. The python imposes invisible chains that restrict our mobility and hinder our progression in life. These can manifest as addictions, low self-esteem, fear, depression, shame, or any bondage that keeps us captive. We must recognize these chains and refuse to accept them as our permanent reality.

The proper reaction. When faced with these chains, our reaction is crucial. Instead of succumbing to worry, fear, or depression, we must initiate a "chain reaction" of praise and prayer. This is an exuberant, defiant response to what once bound us, declaring God's goodness and freedom even in our "midnight hour."

Jailhouse rock. The story of Paul and Silas in prison exemplifies this "chain reaction." Their praise at midnight caused an earthquake, loosening their shackles and opening every prison door. This not only freed them but also the other prisoners, demonstrating that our praise can trigger a ripple effect of deliverance for those around us.

Overcoming spiritual Stockholm syndrome. Many develop a "spiritual Stockholm syndrome," becoming sympathetic to their captivity and believing the enemy's lies more than God's truth. To break free, we must refuse these chains, follow the light of God's Word, and actively pursue the freedom Jesus offers. Our personal "chain reaction" of praise and faith can lead to a widespread awakening and freedom for our families and communities.
