This integration requires a complete restructuring of our lives, moving away from the fragmented existence of the average person.

Beyond ordinary limits. To reach this state, a warrior must systematically tie up the loose ends of their life and push past self-imposed boundaries. This requires a complete shift in how one defines what is possible, transforming impossible feats into natural actions.

• Shifting from the self-confidence of the average man to the humbleness of a warrior
• Consistently pushing oneself beyond perceived physical and mental limits
• Recognizing that impossibility is merely a mental construct of the untrained mind

A design of power. This journey is not a matter of personal choice or casual interest; it is a path orchestrated by the designs of power. 2. The warrior's path requires absolute impeccability and humbleness

The self-confidence of the warrior is not the self-confidence of the average man. The average man seeks certainty in the eyes of the onlooker and calls that self-confidence. The warrior seeks impeccability in his own eyes and calls that humbleness.

Redefining personal power. Impeccability means doing one's absolute best in every single action without expecting rewards, recognition, or validation. It is the ultimate measure of a warrior's spirit and the only way to accumulate the personal power necessary to navigate the unknown. Without impeccability, a warrior's energy is quickly drained by the trivialities of daily life.

Humbleness versus pride. Unlike the average man who relies on the validation of others, a warrior is hooked only to themselves. True humbleness means being entirely impeccable in one's actions and feelings, bowing to no one while demanding no one bow to them.

Living with death's advice. A warrior acts with the acute awareness that their time on this earth is extremely limited. By keeping death as an immediate adviser, trivial worries dissolve, leaving room only for impeccable action. This awareness of mortality transforms every moment into a battle of power, ensuring that the warrior never lets their guard down.

3. Stopping the internal dialogue collapses our constructed reality

To change our idea of the world is the crux of sorcery... And stopping the internal dialogue is the only way to accomplish it.

The world as description. The world we perceive is not an objective reality, but a highly structured description we have been taught since birth. We continuously uphold this description through our endless internal dialogue, talking ourselves into a fixed, rigid reality. By constantly repeating this description to ourselves, we trap our awareness in a narrow, predictable loop.

The gateway to sorcery. When a warrior successfully shuts off their internal dialogue, the constructed world collapses, allowing extraordinary facets of the self to surface. This silence is the indispensable key that unlocks the passageway to the unknown, allowing us to perceive the world as it truly is.

• Suspending the mind's automatic categorization of sensory inputs to allow direct perception

Achieving true silence. True silence is not merely the absence of spoken words, but the complete suspension of the thought process itself. In this state of suspension, the warrior is no longer bound by the chronological rules of the ordinary world. They become fluid, capable of sliding into the sorcerers' explanation of reality with ease.

4. The Tonal is the protective but limiting island of the known

The tonal is the organizer of the world... on its shoulders rests the task of setting the chaos of the world in order.

The island of known. The tonal represents everything we have a name, word, or feeling for, including our social persona, mind, and even our concept of God. Don Juan compares it to the top of a table—an island where everything we know is neatly arranged. It is the creator of our rules, judgments, and assessments, making our passage on earth convenient but highly limited.

From guardian to guard. While the tonal begins as a necessary guardian protecting our physical being, it easily degenerates into a narrow-minded, despotic guard. It becomes jealous of its own creations and fiercely resists any threat to its control, often choosing to destroy the self rather than relinquish its grip.

• The personal tonal is unique to each individual's life, habits, and personal history
• The collective tonal of the times makes us alike in our shared descriptions of reality
• Indulging in self-pity, worry, and ego makes the tonal weak, vulnerable, and decrepit

Sweeping the island clean. A warrior's primary task is to sweep the island of the tonal clean of nonessentials like self-pity and ego. A clean, strong, and fluid tonal offers no resistance, allowing the warrior to safely encounter the unknown. By organizing the tonal on the side of reason and sobriety, the warrior prepares the body for the emergence of the nagual.

5. The Nagual is the boundless, unspeakable realm of pure power

The nagual is the part of us for which there is no description: no words, no names, no feelings, no knowledge.

The boundless void. Surrounding the island of the tonal lies the nagual, an infinite, indescribable area where pure power hovers. It is the part of our being that cannot be understood by reason, only witnessed through the will. The nagual has no limits, no chronological time, and no fixed forms, representing the vastness of our true nature as luminous beings.

The source of creativity. While the tonal can only mold existing elements, the nagual is the sole source of true creativity and extraordinary feats. It is boundless, eternal, and operates outside the constraints of chronological time, allowing the warrior to perform deeds that defy ordinary logic.

The danger of unknown. Because the nagual is incredibly powerful and chaotic, a direct encounter can easily destroy a weak tonal. A warrior must spend years strengthening their tonal to survive the devastating wind of the nagual. Without a strong, balanced tonal, the emergence of the nagual can lead to madness or physical death.

6. The double is a manifestation of the dreamer and the dreamed

Once it has learned to dream the double, the self arrives at this weird crossroad, and a moment comes when one realizes that it is the double who dreams the self.

The sorcerer's double. The double is not an illusion or a mere projection, but the sorcerer himself developed through the art of dreaming. It possesses physical solidity and corporealness, yet it is made of the luminous fibers of our true being. The double is an act of power, allowing a warrior to perform incredible feats across vast distances.

The art of dreaming. Developing the double begins with gaining deliberate control over one's dreams, such as finding one's hands while asleep. Over time, the boundary between waking reality and dreaming dissolves, leading to a profound realization of fluid existence.

A shift in perspective. Ultimately, the warrior realizes that the solid self is no more real than the dreamed double. This realization breaks the final chains of the tonal's rigid description of reality.

7. We live inside a sealed bubble of perception

Sorcerers say that we are 'inside a bubble'. It is a bubble into which we are placed at the moment of our birth... That bubble is our perception.

The sealed reflection. From birth, we are sealed inside a bubble of perception, witnessing only our own reflections on its round walls. This reflection is our view of the world, a description we mistake for absolute reality. We spend our entire lives defending this description, unaware that the bubble can be opened to reveal a vast, uncharted universe.

Unfolding the wings. The ultimate goal of a sorcerer is to open this bubble from the outside, allowing the luminous being to unfold the wings of perception. This enables the warrior to experience the totality of themselves and touch other sensibilities, moving beyond the narrow band of human perception.

• The bubble is tightly sealed by our insistence on using only reason and talking
• Opening the bubble allows us to perceive the here and the there simultaneously
• The wings of perception can transport us to inconceivable worlds and other states of being

We are perceivers. We must realize that we are not solid objects, but boundless, luminous perceivers. By freeing our eyes from the rigid rules of the tonal, we can peer directly into the infinite space of the nagual. This shift in perception allows us to claim our magical heritage as boundless, luminous beings.

8. The teacher cleans the Tonal while the benefactor opens the Nagual

The delicate maneuver of leading a luminous being into the totality of himself requires that the teacher work from inside the bubble and the benefactor from outside.

A dual strategy. The path to the totality of oneself requires the coordinated efforts of both a teacher and a benefactor. The teacher operates within the bubble of perception to reorder the tonal, while the benefactor works from the outside to shatter the seal. This dual approach ensures that the apprentice is neither consumed by the nagual nor trapped by the tonal.

Reordering the island. The teacher's job is to clean the island of the tonal, forcing all its elements onto the side of reason and sobriety. This clears the other half of the bubble, leaving it open for the activation of the will, which is the only center capable of handling the nagual.

The final split. Once the tonal is perfectly swept and balanced, the benefactor delivers a direct blow to split the warrior's perception. This dangerous maneuver allows the warrior to safely step into the boundless void of the nagual. Without this split, the warrior remains trapped on the safe but monotonous island of the tonal.

9. An unbending love for the Earth is the warrior's ultimate source of freedom

Only the love for this splendorous being can give freedom to a warrior's spirit; and freedom is joy, efficiency, and abandon in the face of any odds.

The warrior's beloved. The life of a warrior is not cold, lonely, or devoid of feelings; it is deeply rooted in an unbending passion for the Earth. This magnificent, living being understands every feeling and provides ultimate shelter and comfort. A warrior's joyfulness comes from having accepted their fate and from their deep connection to this splendorous being.

The antidote to loneliness. Without a deep, reciprocal love for the Earth, a warrior's solitude degenerates into bitter loneliness. Loving the Earth with absolute devotion is the only force that can soothe a warrior's pain and liberate their spirit, transforming the dull, dreary chains of ordinary life into a magical journey.
