Key Takeaways

1. Curiosity: The Unseen Force Guiding Exploration Beyond Death

If there is any difference between you and me, it is only that my curiosity has already led me to explore and know what lies beyond death in the Afterlife.

A lifelong quest. Bruce Moen's journey into the Afterlife began with profound childhood curiosity, encapsulated in his "Three Great Questions": where he came from, his purpose in life, and where he goes after death. This innate drive, rather than any supernatural gift or near-death experience, propelled him to seek answers beyond conventional understanding.

Early signs. A recurring childhood daydream, vivid and emotionally charged, convinced him of reincarnation by his early twenties. This deeply personal experience, lacking any logical explanation from his waking life, served as an early landmark, setting the tone and purpose for his future explorations into the unknown.

Beyond the horizon. Moen likens societal fear of death to the historical belief in a flat Earth, where fear limited exploration. He asserts that just as knowledge of Earth's true nature freed sailors, knowledge of the Afterlife can free humanity from the fear of death, encouraging others to embark on their own journeys of discovery.

2. The Accidental Discovery of Conscious Non-Physical Travel

I decided odds had nothing to do with it. I left the hypnosis book on the shelf and went home with Journeys Out of the Body.

Seeking conscious dreams. Driven by his questions, Moen explored various paranormal subjects, eventually focusing on lucid dreaming as a potential gateway to the Afterlife. He diligently practiced techniques from Carlos Castaneda, aiming to consciously enter the dream world.

A shocking awakening. His first lucid dream, though initially exciting, ended with a terrifying encounter and a subsequent experience of intense, full-body vibrations and deafening noise upon waking. This "vibration state" was initially frightening, but he later discovered it was a precursor to out-of-body experiences (OBEs).

Synchronicity intervenes. A seemingly accidental encounter at a library led him to Robert Monroe's "Journeys Out of the Body," a book that described the very vibration state he was experiencing and offered techniques for conscious OBEs. This serendipitous discovery validated his experiences and provided a structured path for further exploration.

3. Unveiling the "Total Self": A Profound Shift in Identity

I sat there stunned, watching and feeling as the who and what I had come to believe I was in the past was disassembled and rearranged into something else.

The Disk Vision. Years before attending The Monroe Institute, Moen experienced a vivid "waking vision" of a humanoid figure connected by a glowing rod to a vast disk covered with faces, each representing a distinct personality. This vision, initially a mystery, became a pivotal landmark in his journey.

Monroe's "cluster." During a Gateway Voyage program, Robert Monroe described his "cluster" or "Total Self" (I/There) – a group of beings, parts of himself, that had completed lifetimes and rejoined a collective consciousness. Monroe's description of a "bowl of small bright lights" and "narrow light beams" triggered a violent internal reordering of Moen's understanding of himself.

A personal revelation. Moen realized Monroe's "cluster" perfectly matched his own Disk Vision, leading to the profound understanding that the humanoid, the disk, and all its personalities were aspects of his own "Total Self." This revelation shattered his previous identity, revealing himself as an "awareness that illumines the unknown to make it known."

4. The Monroe Institute: A Technological Path to Expanded Awareness

The Monroe Institute is a nonprofit educational and research organization devoted to the following premise: Focused consciousness contains all the solutions to the questions of human existence.

Hemi-Sync technology. The Monroe Institute provided a structured, technological approach to exploring consciousness through Hemi-Sync, a sound technology that uses binaural beats to induce hemispheric synchronization in the brain. This creates coherent brain states, such as "Mind Awake/Body Asleep," facilitating altered states of awareness.

Focus levels. TMI's programs guide participants through specific "Focus levels," each representing a different state of consciousness:

  • Focus 10: Mind Awake/Body Asleep, for deep relaxation and mental alertness.
  • Focus 12: Expanded Awareness, for exploring non-physical realities and problem-solving.
  • Focus 15: No Time, where awareness transcends temporal constraints.
  • Focus 21: The Edge of Time and Space, a boundary between physical and non-physical realities.

Beyond dogma. As an engineer and skeptic, Moen appreciated TMI's non-ideological approach, which required no specific beliefs or guru worship. The focus on direct experience through technology appealed to his rational mind, offering a practical method to explore the mysteries of consciousness.

5. Lifeline: Learning to Guide the "Stuck" from Death's Edge

In carrying out these retrievals we might come to know we survive physical death.

Service "There" and "Here." The Lifeline program taught participants to assist newly deceased individuals "stuck" in Focus 23 – a state where they are unaware of their death or unable to move on. This "retrieval" process involves guiding them to Focus 27, the "Reception Center" or "Park," a familiar, Earth-like environment designed to ease their transition.

The challenge of perception. Moen initially struggled to perceive anything in Focus 23 or 25, feeling frustrated and believing it was a "rip off." He learned that his own deeply ingrained beliefs about the Afterlife were blocking his perception, creating a Catch-22 where he needed direct experience to dispel the very beliefs preventing it.

Why physical beings help. Physically alive individuals are uniquely positioned to assist the stuck because the deceased in Focus 23 are still focused on physical reality and can perceive the living. Non-physical Helpers, though present, are often imperceptible to the newly deceased, making the living a crucial bridge for contact and communication.

6. Imagination: The Gateway to Perceiving Non-Physical Realities

Accepting that I wasn't just making this all up in my head was the longest voyage across open sea I had to make before reaching the shores of realities beyond the physical world.

The "pretend" breakthrough. Moen's breakthrough in perceiving non-physical realities came when he reluctantly allowed himself to "pretend" or "imagine" his desired environment in Focus 27. He discovered that imagination, unlike fantasy, engaged a creative power that manifested detailed, perceivable realities without conscious direction.

Imagination as a tool. This realization redefined imagination as a "pump" that, once primed with a small act of pretending, could open a continuous flow of information and perception in non-physical realms. It became a "window or a gateway" through which subtle energies could be perceived as real.

"Imps" and suspended disbelief. To overcome his deep-seated skepticism, Moen coined the term "Imps" (impressions) to describe his perceptions, allowing him to temporarily suspend judgment on their reality. This semantic trick dissolved his paradox, enabling him to explore without the constant internal battle of whether he was "making it all up."

7. The Balance of Perception and Interpretation for True Knowing

The path of Balance on that high wire led to Knowing.

Perceiver vs. Interpreter. During his second Lifeline program, Moen identified two distinct components of his awareness: the "Perceiver," which offers pure, raw impressions from non-physical realities, and the "Interpreter," which associates these impressions with pre-existing memories, often leading to distracting trains of thought.

The challenge of "clicking out." Initially, shutting down the Interpreter too completely led to "clicking out" – periods of unconsciousness where he perceived nothing. Conversely, letting the Interpreter run rampant caused him to lose focus on the non-physical impressions, getting lost in irrelevant thoughts.

Achieving balance. Moen learned to maintain a delicate "Balance" between the Perceiver and the Interpreter, allowing short bursts of interpretation to anchor new perceptions in memory without losing the ongoing experience. This dynamic interplay, likened to riding a bicycle on a high wire, was crucial for both perceiving and remembering, ultimately leading to "Knowing" – a deeper, integrated understanding.

8. Retrievals: A Journey of Healing Both Others and Oneself

I knew that if I could manage to retrieve Joshua my sarcoidosis might halt its advance. It might even go away.

Joshua's story. Moen's retrieval of Joshua, a young Hebrew warrior stuck in the agonizing pain of a spear wound from centuries ago, became a profound personal healing experience. Moen realized his own rare disease, sarcoidosis in his liver, was a physical manifestation of Joshua's unhealed trauma, as they were parts of the same "Total Self."

Healing through retrieval. The process of guiding Joshua to "The Garden" (Focus 27) for healing, where his beliefs about medicine and the Afterlife were honored, directly impacted Moen's physical health. This demonstrated that retrieving aspects of oneself could lead to physical, mental, and spiritual healing in the present lifetime.

Beyond the self. Moen's retrievals extended to others, like Benjie, a little boy stuck since 1953, whom he eventually convinced to leave by "flying" as an "Angel." He also retrieved a priest stuck in Purgatory, realizing that his own past lives as a priest resonated with this experience, further solidifying the interconnectedness of all beings.

9. Non-Physical Guides and New Tools for Enhanced Perception

It is a useful tool of perception in any reality.

Shee-un's technique. Moen learned a new method of perception from a Guide named Shee-un, involving shifting his awareness from his head to a specific spot in the center of his chest. This "Shee-un spot" technique dramatically enhanced his perception, bringing dazzling, full-color, 3-D experiences in the non-physical world.

White Bear's wisdom. Another Guide, White Bear, taught Moen to communicate with animals in the physical world by entering their level of consciousness. This experience, where animals showed no fear and he could sense their thoughts, demonstrated the expansion of his perceptual abilities beyond human-centric communication.

Coach: The liaison. Coach, a personality from Moen's own I/There, emerged as a primary liaison and Guide, providing exercises, advice, and a focal point for communication with his "Total Self." Coach's presence and guidance were instrumental in Moen's continued learning and overcoming challenges.

10. Overcoming Skepticism: The Relentless Pursuit of Verification

Not that all my doubts were erased by that single event, but a fair-sized chunk of the skepticism I'd been carrying since my first Lifeline program dissolved and washed away.

The need for proof. Despite profound personal experiences, Moen, an engineer, harbored deep skepticism and a "consuming hunger" for verifiable, physical-world evidence. He meticulously compared notes with Rebecca after non-physical meetings, finding consistent, minute details that matched, yet still sought irrefutable proof.

The Eduardo confirmation. A seemingly minor detail—his non-physical perception that his niece's housemate, Eduardo, was gay—was later confirmed by his sister. This single, independently verifiable piece of information, obtained solely through non-physical means, significantly eroded his long-held skepticism.

Ongoing validation. Moen's journey involved continuous testing and validation, from remote sensing projects with Rebecca to "ghost busting" in Barbara's house. Each successful, verifiable interaction, no matter how small, chipped away at his doubts, building trust in his perceptions and the reality of the non-physical world.

11. "Seeing It Not There": A Powerful Technique for Energetic Release

Seeing it not there is a simple technique and it works every time.

The "black stuff." Moen encountered "black stuff" – clinging, painful emotional energy like fear, grief, or guilt – surrounding individuals in Focus 23. His initial attempts to physically remove it were agonizing and ineffective, causing him intense burning and stinging pain.

Rebecca's teaching. Rebecca, a seasoned trainer, taught him the technique of "seeing it not there." This subtle yet powerful method involves perceiving the person without the negative energy, rather than actively trying to make the energy disappear. It implies no resistance, allowing the energy to dissipate effortlessly.

Effective application. Moen successfully applied "seeing it not there" to retrieve a woman trapped by debris in Focus 23, demonstrating its efficacy. This technique became a crucial tool for dealing with clinging emotional energies, highlighting the importance of non-resistance and focused intent in energetic work.

12. The Natural Process of Dying: Dispelling Fear Through Knowledge

It is only the interference of our own fears and beliefs that inhibit the natural process of dying.

Beyond isolation. Moen emphasizes that not everyone who dies becomes "stuck" in Focus 23. Isolation occurs when personal fears and beliefs interfere with the natural dying process. Most individuals transition smoothly, met by loved ones or Helpers in the Afterlife, often in places like the Reception Center or Belief System Territories.

The purpose of retrievals. Retrievals, while a core part of his learning, are a specific intervention for those whose fears or beliefs prevent a natural transition. They serve as a "port of entry" for explorers to gain access and understanding of the Afterlife, not as a universal necessity for the deceased.

Empowering the living. Moen's ultimate goal is to share his knowledge, encouraging others to explore the Afterlife for themselves. By understanding the natural dying process and the realities beyond physical death, individuals can shed fear, assist others, and experience their own transitions with peace and knowing.
