Fix Your Period

Fix Your Period

Turn your period into a health report: the six-week fix that skips the pill.

Summary in 30 Seconds
Period pain is a warning, not a burden. The pill masks it by stopping ovulation without fixing the cause. Blood sugar is the master lever: cortisol and insulin override sex hormones and block ovulation when elevated. A sluggish liver or gut recirculates used estrogen, fueling heavy periods. Align diet, exercise, and work to your cycle's four phases, not against them.

Key Takeaways

1. Your period is a vital sign, and cycle symptoms are your body's early-warning system

A woman’s body isn’t broken, and symptoms aren’t its way of betraying you.

Your body's barometer. The menstrual cycle is far more than a monthly inconvenience; it is a critical vital sign of your overall health. Just as a fever signals an infection, period problems like debilitating cramps, heavy bleeding, or irregular cycles are your body's way of communicating that something is wrong under the hood.

Common but not normal. Society has normalized menstrual suffering, but pain that leaves you in the fetal position or mood swings that ruin relationships are pathological. These symptoms indicate systemic issues:

  • Systemic inflammation or pelvic floor dysfunction (painful periods)
  • Nutrient deficiencies or chronic stress (irregular cycles)
  • Thyroid issues, fibroids, or adenomyosis (excessively heavy flows)

Cultivating body literacy. Reclaiming your health requires learning to observe, chart, and interpret your cycle events. By becoming period literate, you transition from being a passive victim of your symptoms to an active advocate for your own healing.

2. The birth control pill is a temporary Band-Aid that overrides your natural cycle

The Pill most definitely does not regulate a period.

The great illusion. Millions of women are prescribed the birth control pill to "fix" their period problems, but synthetic hormones merely mask underlying imbalances. The bleeding experienced during the placebo week is not a real period; it is a chemical withdrawal bleed caused by a sudden drop in synthetic hormones.

Halting natural processes. Hormonal contraceptives work by shutting down communication between your brain and ovaries, effectively stopping ovulation. Without ovulation, your body cannot produce the natural sex hormones required for optimal health:

  • Estrogen, which protects your heart, blood vessels, and brain
  • Progesterone, which soothes the nervous system and protects against cancer
  • Testosterone, which drives libido, motivation, and muscle strength

The post-pill fallout. When women eventually discontinue the Pill, their original symptoms often return with a vengeance, sometimes accompanied by new issues like post-pill amenorrhea or severe acne. True hormonal balance can only be achieved by addressing root causes rather than chemically suppressing your biology.

3. Hormones operate in a strict hierarchy, governed by cortisol and insulin

I consider the tier 1 hormones, cortisol and insulin, the queen bees of the endocrine system.

The endocrine symphony. Your endocrine system functions like an orchestra, where every hormone must play in harmony. At the top of this hormonal hierarchy sit the Tier 1 "life and death" hormones: cortisol and insulin. When these queen bees are disrupted, they trigger a chaotic cascade that destabilizes Tier 2 (pregnenolone, DHEA) and Tier 3 (estrogen, progesterone, thyroid) hormones.

The survival priority. From an evolutionary perspective, your body prioritizes survival over reproduction. When cortisol (the stress hormone) and insulin (the blood sugar regulator) spike, they send a clear signal to your ovaries to halt non-essential operations:

  • Cortisol delays or stops ovulation to prevent pregnancy during perceived danger.
  • Insulin spikes trigger the ovaries to produce excess testosterone instead of estrogen.
  • High cortisol suppresses thyroid function to conserve energy for the "threat."

A holistic approach. Because of this interconnectedness, you cannot successfully treat Tier 3 sex hormone issues like PMS or low libido in isolation. True healing requires stabilizing your Tier 1 hormones first through targeted dietary and lifestyle adjustments.

4. Ovulation, not menstruation, is the true star of the menstrual cycle

Contrary to popular belief, ovulation, not menstruation, is the star of the menstrual cycle show.

The hormone factory. Many women believe the main event of their cycle is the bleed, but menstruation is merely the side effect of not getting pregnant. Ovulation is the actual driver of your health, acting as the primary mechanism through which your body manufactures essential sex hormones.

The corpus luteum. Once an egg is successfully released from its follicle, the remaining shell transforms into a temporary endocrine gland called the corpus luteum. This remarkable, self-assembling gland is solely responsible for producing progesterone, the "Keep Calm and Carry On" hormone that:

  • Soothes the nervous system and reduces premenstrual anxiety
  • Promotes deep, restorative sleep and protects breast tissue
  • Balances the proliferative, tissue-growing effects of estrogen

Anovulatory silent struggles. If you do not ovulate, you are experiencing an anovulatory cycle. Even if you still bleed, the absence of ovulation means you are operating under a severe deficit of progesterone, leaving estrogen unopposed and setting the stage for heavy, painful, and highly symptomatic periods.

5. Stabilizing blood sugar is the ultimate shortcut to hormonal peace

The link between insulin hyperproduction and your sex hormones is why hormonal imbalances always—yes, always—improve when you eat to stabilize your blood sugar.

The insulin trap. Consuming refined carbohydrates and sugar forces your pancreas to pump out massive amounts of insulin to clear glucose from your bloodstream. This rapid clearance causes a blood sugar crash, leaving you fatigued, anxious, and "hangry," while driving a vicious cycle of intense cravings.

Ovarian disruption. Chronically elevated insulin directly damages ovarian function. Because ovaries contain insulin receptors, excess insulin stimulates them to produce male hormones (androgens) like testosterone while suppressing estrogen, leading to:

  • Delayed or completely halted ovulation (the root of PCOS)
  • Lowered sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), freeing up more active testosterone
  • Systemic inflammation that intensifies menstrual cramps and migraines

Stepping off the coaster. To stabilize your blood sugar, you must restructure your meals to include a balance of complex carbohydrates, high-quality protein, and healthy fats. Eating a protein-rich breakfast within an hour of waking and avoiding caffeine on an empty stomach are simple, transformative habits that instantly calm insulin secretion.

6. A healthy gut microbiome is essential for regulating and excreting estrogen

Everything from obesity to endometriosis has been traced back to the delicate balance of microorganisms, enzymes, and substances in our guts, making the old adage “Go with your gut” more relevant today than ever.

The estrobolome connection. Your gut is home to a specialized community of bacteria called the estrobolome, which is tasked with regulating estrogen levels. Once the liver deactivates used estrogen, it sends it to the intestines to be excreted; however, an unhealthy gut can reverse this entire process.

Recycling toxic estrogen. When gut dysbiosis occurs, bad bacteria produce excess levels of an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase. This enzyme reactivates the bound estrogen, allowing it to slip back through the gut wall and re-enter the bloodstream, causing:

  • Estrogen dominance, which fuels PMS, heavy periods, and fibroids
  • Increased risk of estrogen-driven cancers (breast, ovarian, endometrial)
  • Chronic pelvic pain and the progression of endometriosis lesions

Plugging the leaks. To heal your gut and balance your estrobolome, you must eliminate inflammatory triggers like gluten, dairy, and sugar, which cause leaky gut. Supporting your stomach acid with digestive bitters and introducing probiotic-rich fermented foods will rebuild your intestinal barrier and ensure estrogen is permanently excreted.

7. Your liver is the primary housekeeper responsible for neutralizing excess hormones

Let’s put it this way: if your hormones are out of whack, it’s likely your liver has something to do with it.

The processing plant. Your liver acts as your body's primary filtration system, constantly breaking down environmental toxins, medications, and used hormones. If your liver becomes congested due to poor diet, alcohol, or chemical exposure, it cannot effectively deactivate estrogen, leading to systemic hormonal backup.

The two-phase detox. Estrogen detoxification occurs in two main phases within the liver. Phase One converts estrogen into metabolites (some safe, some highly proliferative and carcinogenic), while Phase Two binds these metabolites to nutrients so they become water-soluble and safe for excretion:

  • Phase One requires heavy antioxidant support (vitamins C, E, and B vitamins).
  • Phase Two relies on amino acids and methylation (heavily impacted by the MTHFR gene).
  • Sluggish Phase Two processing allows toxic intermediate metabolites to damage cellular DNA.

Reducing the toxic load. You can dramatically ease your liver's burden by reducing your exposure to synthetic xenoestrogens found in plastics (BPA), conventional personal care products (parabens, phthalates), and pesticide-laden foods. Piling your plate with cruciferous vegetables provides the essential compounds (I3C, DIM, and sulforaphane) needed to optimize both detox pathways.

8. Chronic stress hijacks the HPA axis and shuts down reproductive function

Chronically overwhelmed by stress, your body and brain determine that your life circumstances are too dangerous for reproduction, and the mere act of ovulation is marked as “low priority.”

The HPA axis hijack. Your body's stress response is managed by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. When you experience chronic psychological or physical stress, the brain constantly triggers the adrenals to pump out cortisol, which systematically de-prioritizes your reproductive system to conserve energy for survival.

The progesterone block. High cortisol levels directly sabotage your sex hormones on multiple fronts. Cortisol suppresses the brain hormones (GnRH, FSH, LH) required to signal the ovaries to ovulate, while simultaneously blocking progesterone receptors:

  • This creates a state of functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (missing periods).
  • It mimics progesterone deficiency, even if your blood levels of progesterone are normal.
  • It lowers your libido, as testosterone is diverted to support stress pathways.

Reclaiming calm. To heal HPA axis dysfunction, you must establish firm personal boundaries, learn your stress threshold, and prioritize sleep. Implementing a strict "light curfew" for electronic devices after 9 p.m. and getting morning sunlight in your eyes will naturally reset your cortisol-melatonin rhythm.

9. Suboptimal thyroid function directly derails your menstrual regularity and fertility

Though small in size, this butterfly-shaped gland impacts virtually every organ.

The metabolic engine. Your thyroid gland produces hormones (T3 and T4) that regulate your body's metabolism, temperature, and energy production. Because every single cell in your body has a thyroid hormone receptor, a sluggish thyroid (hypothyroidism) starves your reproductive organs of the energy they need to function.

The thyroid-period link. Suboptimal thyroid function is a hidden root cause of many menstrual abnormalities. Low thyroid hormones disrupt pituitary hormone production, impairing follicle development and leading to:

  • Heavy, painful, and highly frequent periods (hypothyroidism)
  • Extremely light, irregular, or completely missing periods (hyperthyroidism)
  • Low basal body temperature, which prevents a fertilized embryo from successfully dividing

Comprehensive testing. Conventional medicine often misdiagnoses thyroid issues by only testing TSH. To get a true picture of your thyroid health, you must request a full panel—including free T3, free T4, and thyroid antibodies—and support your gland with essential minerals like selenium, zinc, and iron.

10. Cycle syncing allows you to harness your natural hormonal ebbs and flows

By recognizing these changes and living in sync with them, you can ensure that you’re always performing at your best.

The four seasons. Your body is not designed to operate at the same energy level every day. By dividing your cycle into four distinct phases—Bleeding (Winter), Follicular (Spring), Ovulatory (Summer), and Luteal (Autumn)—you can align your diet, exercise, and social commitments with your shifting hormones.

Phase-specific strategies. Each phase of your cycle presents unique biological strengths and nutritional requirements that you can actively leverage:

  • Bleeding Phase: Focus on rest, warm starchy foods, and gentle movement like walking.
  • Follicular Phase: Capitalize on rising estrogen with creative projects, social events, and high-intensity workouts.
  • Ovulatory Phase: Maximize peak confidence and libido for public speaking, networking, and strength training.
  • Luteal Phase: Honor the transition to progesterone with detail-oriented work, blood-sugar-stabilizing fats, and restorative self-care.

Harnessing moon magic. If your period is currently missing or highly irregular, you can still practice cycle syncing by aligning your lifestyle with the phases of the moon. Treating the new moon as your bleeding phase and the full moon as your ovulatory phase provides a powerful energetic framework that can coax your natural cycle back into rhythm.
