Rudolf Franz Ferdinand Höss was an SS-Obersturmbannführer and the first commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp from May 1940 to November 1943.
Born in 1900 or 1901, Höss joined the Nazi Party in 1922 and the SS in 1934.
He was responsible for overseeing the murder of millions of people at Auschwitz.
After the war, Höss was captured and put on trial for war crimes.
He wrote his autobiography while in prison, attempting to explain his actions and portray himself in a more sympathetic light.
Höss was found guilty and hanged on April 16, 1947, at the age of 45 or 46.
