Cornelius Ryan was born in Dublin and moved to London in 1940, becoming a war correspondent for The Daily Telegraph.
He flew on fourteen bombing missions with the USAAF and reported on General Patton's Third Army through the end of the European war.
After emigrating to the United States in 1947, he worked for several major publications.
Inspired by a 1949 visit to Normandy, Ryan spent years researching D-Day, producing The Longest Day in 1959.
He went on to write The Last Battle and A Bridge Too Far, completing his WWII trilogy despite battling cancer, dying shortly after its publication in 1974.
