Jeanne de Salzmann was born in 1889 in Reims, France, and raised in Geneva, Switzerland.
She married Russian painter Alexandre de Salzmann in 1912 and moved to Tiflis in the Caucasus.
In 1919, she met Gurdjieff and became deeply committed to his teachings, remaining close to him until his 1949 death.
Before dying, Gurdjieff charged her to live past 100 to establish his teaching, granting her rights to his writings and Movements.
Over forty years, she published his books, preserved the Movements, and established Gurdjieff centers in Paris, New York, London, and Caracas.
She died in Paris in 1990, aged 101.
