Georges Joseph Christian Simenon (1903–1989) was a remarkably prolific Belgian novelist, publishing nearly 500 works and accumulating roughly 550 million copies sold worldwide.
Though he left Belgium in 1922, he retained Belgian citizenship throughout his life.
He is most celebrated for his 75 novels and 28 short stories featuring Commissaire Maigret, a series spanning from 1931 to 1972, adapted into films and television.
Beyond detective fiction, Simenon wrote deeply psychological "roman durs," exploring dark corners of human nature.
His American period proved especially creatively fertile.
In 1966, he received the Mystery Writers of America's prestigious Grand Master Award.
