Originally an Anglican pastor, he converted to Catholicism in 1903 and was ordained the following year.
Benson wrote in various genres, including historical fiction, horror, science fiction, apologetics, and devotional works.
His most famous novel is the dystopian Lord of the World.
He rose through the Catholic hierarchy, becoming a Chamberlain to Pope Pius X in 1911 and receiving the title of Monsignor.
Benson continued writing throughout his ecclesiastical career until his death a few years after his papal appointment.
