Jeff Brown was the pen name of Richard Chester Brown, a former child actor who became a writer and editor.
He created the popular Flat Stanley series, which began in 1964 and has sold nearly a million copies in the US alone.
Brown's idea for Stanley came from a bedtime conversation with his sons.
The character's adventures have been translated into multiple languages and inspired the Flat Stanley Project, an educational initiative started in 1995.
Brown worked in Hollywood, contributed to various magazines, and was a senior editor at Warner Books before focusing on writing full-time.
