Frans G. Bengtsson was a Swedish author born in 1894.
He studied at the University of Lund and wrote extensively on historical and literary topics.
Bengtsson translated numerous works, including Paradise Lost and Walden, and published poetry and essays.
His biography of Charles XII won acclaim from the Swedish Academy.
The Long Ships, published in two parts (1941 and 1945), became his most famous work.
Bengtsson opposed Nazism and refused a Norwegian translation during German occupation.
He married Gerda Fineman in 1939 and died in 1954 after a long illness.
